Definition
Vehicle batteries are lead-acid batteries. Lead-acid batteries can also be found in boats, snowmobiles, golf carts, motorcycles, all-terrain vehicles and wheelchairs.
Legal Considerations
It is illegal to put vehicle batteries and other lead acid batteries in the trash.
By law, vehicle battery retailers must accept up to five lead-acid batteries per consumer for free regardless of where the batteries were purchased.
Disposal
Do not put batteries of any kind in your curbside recycling bin.
Bring vehicle batteries and other lead-acid batteries to the household hazardous waste collection sites for free.
You can also bring vehicle batteries to a vehicle battery retailer.
When you buy a new vehicle battery, you are required to turn in your old battery for recycling. Otherwise, there is a $5 fee.
