To-Go Cups & Lids

Definition

To-go cups and lids refer to the cups you might get from a coffee shop or fast food restaurant.

Disposal

To-Go Cups: most to-go cups cannot be recycled or composted. This is because there is a plastic lining in the cups to avoid leakage. Therefore, unless explicitly noted on the cup, to-go cups should be placed in the trash.

Plastic Straws: plastic straws should be placed in the trash.

Recycle

Compostable To-Go Cups: some to-go cups are compostable and will explicitly state this on the cup. These cups are accepted at the food scraps collection sites.

To-Go Cups: plastic to-go cups with a number 1, 2 or 5 on them can be placed in your curbside recycling bin.

To-Go Lids: plastic to-go lids with a #5 on them can be placed in your curbside recycling bin. Some lids are compostable and will explicitly state this on the lid. These lids are accepted at the food scraps collection sites.

Coffee Sleeves: coffee sleeves are generally made out of cardboard and can be placed in your curbside recycling bin.

Compostable Straws: some straws are compostable and generally state this on the straw wrapper or straw itself. These straws are accepted at the food scraps collection sites.

Please note: when in doubt, throw it out. Do not put an item in food scraps collection unless you know it is certified compostable.
