Railroad ties contain chemicals to protect them from damage due to insects, moisture and fungi.

Legal Considerations

It is illegal to burn treated wood (including railroad ties) in wood stoves, fireplaces or recreational or cooking fires. Burning releases chemicals that can be harmful to human health and the environment.

Disposal

Do not bring treated wood to the yard waste collection sites.
