Solar panels are also referred to as photovoltaic (PV) solar panels.

Legal Considerations

It is technically legal to put solar panels in the trash if they are owned by the homeowner. However, properly recycling solar panels is greatly preferred.

Recycle

Most homeowners have a warranty or contract for their solar panels. If the panels fall under the warranty (usually 25 years), then it’s the responsibility of the installer or the manufacturer to recycle the solar panels properly. Check your warranty or contract for responsibility, if applicable.

Alternatively, solar panels can be brought to the recycling companies listed below. Call to verify items accepted, hours and fees.

If applicable, drain heat transfer liquid before disposing.

If the heat transfer liquid is antifreeze, bring antifreeze to the household hazardous waste collection sites for free.
If the heat transfer liquid is a salt solution, pour the solution down a sanitary sewer (like a toilet or utility sink), followed by lots of water.
If you’re not sure what type of heat transfer liquid is used, drain liquid into a closable container and bring it to the household hazardous waste collections sites for free.
