Testing is an important way to keep COVID-19 from spreading.

Types of tests

Molecular/PCR test Antigen/Rapid test
  • Most accurate way to detect the COVID-19 virus. A PCR test is one version of molecular test.
  • Only one molecular test is needed— more tests are not necessary.
  • Usually done in a clinic or hospital.
  • Results may take a couple of days because tests must be sent to a laboratory.

  • Test results are available within 10 - 30 minutes.
  • Positive test results are usually correct and reliable.
  • Take more than one antigen test if the first test result is negative.
  • If someone does not have symptoms, antigen tests are less likely to be correct.

Testing options

Minnesota residents have several COVID-19 testing options, including self-testing, community testing locations, and some clinics, hospitals and pharmacies.

Self-testing kits

Rapid self-tests can be done anywhere. It is important to follow directions and use tests that are approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). The FDA has extended many COVID-19 Rapid Test expiration dates

Federal Government

  • Every home in the U.S. can order 4 more free tests starting November 2023. If you did not order tests in fall 2023, you can place two orders for a total of 8 tests.
  • Tests are updated to detect the presence of the latest variants.
  • Tests have an extended shelf life and expiration dates.

State of Minnesota

  • Four free at-home rapid tests are available to all Minnesota households, once a month, while supplies last.
  • Need help placing an order? Call the MDH COVID-19 Public hotline 1-833-431-2053 available Monday - Friday: 9 a.m. to 7 p.m., Saturday: 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.
  • Language assistance is available.
