Deputy Academy
As a Ramsey County Deputy Sheriff, you’ll perform law enforcement work such as patrol, investigations, and apprehension; security and custody; court security; civil legal process; crime prevention and community outreach; and, other duties as assigned.

Requirements
To be a Deputy Sheriff, you must meet the following requirements:
- Education: Academic and skills course requirements for state licensure which require successful completion of a two-year college program in law enforcement and an eight-week skills course; or equivalent training/experience recognized by the Minnesota Board of Peace Officers Standards and Training (POST).
- Experience: None.
- Substitution: None.
- Certifications/Licensure: Licensure as a Peace Officer by the Minnesota Board of Peace Officer Standards and Training, and a valid driver’s license.

Application Process
The first step is to apply online. Please complete the online application and attach a copy of a copy of your POST license or POST eligibility letter to your application.
Once you apply online, your application will be reviewed. If you meet the minimum qualifications, you will advance in the hiring process. The hiring process includes:
- Physical agility test
- Oral interview
- Background investigation
- Psychological evaluation
- Medical evaluation/work simulation
Sheriff’s Office staff will help guide you through the hiring processing. Throughout the hiring process, you will be in contact with the Training Unit and receive information and updates.
Deputy Sheriff Wages
- The 2024 salary range for Deputy Sheriff is $66,107 to $100,651 annually, plus overtime.
- The current contract allows a starting salary of up to $45.63/hourly or $94,912 annually (plus overtime).
- Deputy Sheriffs also receive salary increases based on their years of service.
- Deputy Sheriffs are eligible for a variety of premium pay, including but not limited to night, Saturday, and Sunday differentials; investigator pay; K-9 (Canine); field training; and, on-call/call back pay.
- The Sheriff’s Office has off-duty employment opportunities as well as numerous overtime openings throughout the year.
- After three years of service, Deputy Sheriffs are eligible for promotion to Sergeant, with a salary range of $99k-$119k annually (plus overtime).
Uniform Allowance
- The Sheriff’s Office provides a uniform allowance of $900 per year. As a new Deputy, you will be advanced two years' uniform allowance ($1,800) to cover your uniform needs.
- A firearm, taser, radio, and chemical irritant are provided by the Sheriff’s Office at no cost to you.
