Youth Safety Classes
The Ramsey County Sheriff’s Office, under the direction of the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (DNR), provides youth safety classes on various topics related to outdoor activities.
Class schedule
The Ramsey County Sheriff’s Office offers classes throughout the year. Class dates and times throughout the state are listed on the Department of Natural Resources website approximately two months prior to the class.
Class sizes are limited, offered on a first come, first serve basis, and subject to change. Details about the classes are found on the Department of Natural Resources website.
Snowmobile safety
The purpose of this training course is to teach participants the safe operation of a snowmobile. The rules and regulations for operating a snowmobile on public lands and waters in Minnesota are also taught. Upon completion, youth receive a certificate to operate a snowmobile in Minnesota.
The Sheriff's Office conducts Snowmobile Online Field Day courses in early January, dependent upon seasonal snow cover. This one day classroom and ride performance course is required for those that have completed the online course. The course, for youth ages 11-15, is often offered twice. Participants must register in advance. Registration links will be available on this webpage when the 2019 training is scheduled.

Firearms safety
The purpose of this training course is to teach participants the safe handling of firearms and hunter responsibility. Upon completion, youth receive a firearm certification.
Firearms safety certificate training may be required by law. Visit the Department of Natural Resources website for current Firearms Safety Certificate Training Requirements.
DNR Firearm Certification is required of anyone born after December 31, 1979, to purchase a Hunting License in Minnesota. Students must be 11 years of age or older to attend the class.
ATV safety
The purpose of this training course is to teach participants the safe operation of an ATV. Upon completion, youth will receive a certificate to operate an ATV in Minnesota.

The Sheriff's Office does conduct the Hands-On ATV Safety Certification Course in the spring of the year. This is the one-day classroom and ride performance course for youth age 6 to 15 that is required for those that have completed the online course. Course times will be listed on this website when available.
