PrEP (Pre-exposure Prophylaxis)

PrEP is for people who do not have HIV and are vulnerable to getting HIV. PrEP does not prevent other sexually transmitted infections and does not prevent pregnancy.

PrEP may be a good option for you if: 

• You or your sex partners do not always use condoms when having sex.
• You do not know if your sex partners have HIV.
• You have sex with someone who has HIV and they may or may not be on HIV medication.
• You have sex for money, shelter, drugs or other needs. 
• You are a person who injects drugs, or you have sex with someone who does. 

1. Call Clinic 555 at 651-266-1255 to make a PrEP appointment. 
    
2. Our health care providers will help you decide if PrEP is a good choice for you and make sure your body is able to take PrEP safely.
    
3. Whether you have insurance or not, we will help you navigate payment assistance programs that provide free or affordable PrEP.
    
4. Once you are prescribed PrEP, you will take as directed, often one pill, once a day. There is also an injectable option, as available.
    
5. If you forget your pill, take it as soon as you remember. If it’s the following day, do not take two pills at the same time to catch up. Take one pill and go back to your regular schedule. If you choose injectable PrEP and miss your injection appointment, reschedule as soon as possible, within 7 days of your missed appointment. If it has been longer than 7 days, call your provider. 
    
6. As long as you are taking oral PrEP, you will need to return to Clinic 555 every 3-6 months to monitor your health and get tested for HIV. If you choose injectable PrEP, you will need to return to Clinic 555 every 2 months, after your initial 1 month follow up.

How can I pay for PrEP?

Most people pay little or nothing at all for PrEP. If you do not have insurance or your insurance doesn’t cover PrEP, Clinic 555 can help sign you up for payment assistance programs. 

How quickly does PrEP start working?

For receptive anal sex, it takes 7 days to reach maximum protection. For receptive vaginal sex and for injection drug use, it takes 20 days to reach maximum protection.   

What are additional HIV prevention strategies?

• Condoms.
• Reduce number of sex partners.
• Follow safer sex practices.
• Decrease drug and alcohol use.
• Use more lube.
• Regular STI testing.
• Discuss HIV status with sex partners.
• Use clean needles.
• For possible HIV exposure, access PEP (Post-Exposure Prophylaxis).
